Heat as a battery: using a heat pump with dynamic prices
A heat pump is essentially a thermal battery: you can store heat in your home or buffer tank when electricity is cheap. By linking a heat pump to Leafy Energy tariffs, most of your heating demand can be shifted into favourable hours.
Three basic strategies
- Price-driven: run more during cheap hours and less during expensive hours.
- Comfort-plus: slightly pre-heat your home before an expensive block starts.
- Eco: guarantee a minimum temperature and let everything else follow price.
Integration options
- Directly via the OEM heat pump API (if supported).
- Via a home automation gateway like Home Assistant or Homey.
- Using smart thermostats or relays controlling on/off or modulation signals.
In Leafy Energy demos, combining charts for heat pump power, outdoor temperature, and price levels clearly shows how the system “pre-heats” during cheap windows.
