Not every device needs to be smart – but some are perfect candidates
In theory, any electric device can be linked to dynamic tariffs. In practice, some categories offer far higher impact than others. This article helps you choose where to start.
Top candidates for dynamic control
- EV charge points – high consumption, lots of temporal flexibility.
- Heat pumps and electric boilers – thermal storage is often easier than people think.
- Home batteries – charge at low prices, discharge at high prices.
- Washing machines, dryers, dishwashers – highly schedulable with clear cycles.
Nice-to-have devices
- Electric heaters and infrared panels – balancing comfort and cost.
- AC units – cool when cheap, coast when expensive.
- Pool and pond pumps – often long runtimes, so strong candidates.
Less suitable
- Devices you use very briefly and unpredictably (kettle, vacuum cleaner).
- Devices that require immediate response (cooktop, microwave).
In Leafy Energy demos you can show, per category, what share of household consumption has “time flexibility” and which devices therefore deliver the biggest impact.
