What happens when prices go negative?
With dynamic tariffs, prices can sometimes become extremely low or even negative. Leafy Energy can take advantage of this by planning extra charging.
Negative prices in practice
- Typically occur when there is lots of solar and wind power and low demand.
- Usually limited to a few hours in a day.
- Shown in the app as dark green or specially highlighted price bars.
How Leafy Energy responds
- The system tries to maximise charging in those hours, within your configured limits.
- You can allow extra charging during negative prices as long as your battery can handle it.
In a demo this gives a strong “wow effect”: when prices drop below zero, the planned charging blocks visibly jump into those hours.
